In celebration of the spinach-loving sailor’s 90th birthday, King Features Syndicate, a unit of Hearst and home to some of the world’s most popular entertainment characters, teamed up with YOHO!, the leader of pop culture, and Joy City, the popular shopping mall in Beijing, to present a collection of Popeye creative works and artistic installations. The deal was brokered by King Features’ local agent, Medialink Group Limited (2230.hk) is a leading distributor of third-party owned media content headquartered in Hong Kong SAR with presence in China, Japan and South East Asia.

Sailor. Tough guy. Hero. Legend. That’s Popeye. An underdog with bulging forearms, a mean uppercut and a love of canned spinach, he is unassuming, unsophisticated and undeterred by a challenge. From the minute he walked into the comic strip “Thimble Theatre” and muttered his famous “Ja think I’m a cowboy?” line, Popeye the Sailor Man captured the hearts of millions of fans around the globe. As the star of his own comics strips and animated content on the big screen and small, Popeye became quickly ingrained in American culture and today remains one of the most recognizable pop-culture icons in the world.

There are 50 artists from 12 countries around the world are participating in the Popeye exhibition at Joy City shopping mall by displaying art inspired by the salty sailor and his friends. The exhibition features more than 100 pieces of Popeye creative works, including traditional and classical art, technology, collectibles, and even a large double-deck, 8-meter vintage sailboat.

The exhibition and pop-up store have already sold hundreds of limited-edition Popeye products, some of which sold out on the first day. The Popeye 90th Anniversary Exhibition opened in June and runs through Aug. 4, 2019, at the Joy City Mall.

“The Popeye 90th Anniversary Art Exhibition is a perfect crossover of Popeye-inspired classic IP, art, and fashion,” said Carla Silva, vice president, and general manager, global head of licensing for King Features. “We are thrilled to be working with these amazing artists for this special birthday tribute in China.”

The birthday bash launched with the debut of “Popeye’s Island Adventures,” a new animated-short series for children, airing exclusively on the Popeye and Friends Official YouTube channel, and the highly anticipated “Popeye’s Cartoon Club” comic strip series on ComicsKingdom.com.

Above all, this is an amazing exhibition, which is collaborated by art and popular character in the world! We look forward to the creative works will be held again!
